So what do you expect will be the most popular topics in your forum, Kirit?

I expect that the answer to that might be fun reading in a couple of years time ;-)

LOL

Well, to be fair, I expect that most will probably be questions and answers on the more technical articles. If I do manage anything really controversial I expect my limited bandwidth will mean not many people will be able to stay on the site for long enough to be able to post anything.

It will be interesting to see how this develops over the next month, let alone the next year or two. As for ten years, twenty? That seems an awfully long way away. I don't even know what I'm doing next week yet!

That's a terrible answer isn't it? Talk about evasive.

What I'd really like to see is that the things I write puncture people's pre-concieved notions about what is normal, how things should be done, and what is right and wrong. I hope that will trigger a lot of lively debate.

I expect my right-honourable friend will be along any minute to refer him to the answer he gave previously.

Incidentally, I saw your mum at Petts Wood station yesterday morning - she said they had a jolly good time in BKK over Xmas…..

Have you sorted out your new abode, yet? Your mum suggested that you were off to inspect a patch of land near the new airport (is that opening any time soon?) to see whether it would be suitable for you to build your own Ceauşescuan-style palace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_the_Parliament_(Romania)

That's also the reason why there are an awful lot of stray dogs in Bucharest, apparently…..

Is this the kind of statesman-like pronouncement you were expecting, BJS?

I don't think we're looking for anything quite that grand. A house rather than a flat, but probably not a rambling hundred room palace.

I understand though that the airport may well be open this year. We're expecting some time over the summer, but it may be as late as autumn. Anything could happen yet though…

Actually. when you take into account the need for a guest bedroom, study etc the Palace of Parliament can seem quite cramped…

OK we're certainly getting off topic here, but…

I can't work out what the palace has to do with stray dogs? I'm missing something right?

Let me explain, as your wife might say.

You can't build one of the biggest buildings on Earth, in the middle of a city centre, on spare land. So Ceauşescu sent in the bulldozers to flatten a lot of people's houses, in the name of the socialist revolution, of course. And they had to get out of their old houses in such a hurry that lots of dogs got left behind, although they weren't so stupid as to get crushed by the bulldozers. So they formed packs, un-domesticated themselves and, well, you can guess the rest.

Simple, really.

So what your telling Kirit, is that he must be nice to the dogies when building a new house, or the whole country will go off its hinges. Hmmm… I am sure I must have missed that part when reading my Feng Shui book.

But never mind, I have a new question. Maybe I should have created a new post for a new topic, but having gotten this far… here goes:

What is the function of the "SHOW" buttons on this site? I can see the purpose, if something was hidden in the first place, but on my screen its all the same. So what gives?

Expectations for the future? BJS 1st March, 2006 17:24 (UTC)

Being an impatient soul, I haven't got the time to sit around and wait for your reply. After a bit of testing, I discover that when looking at the Last Ten Posts. You could potentially bee looking at 10 different threads, and pressing the Show-link will show you that exact post where it belongs. But so will the Tread-link, although it will start from the top of the tread. But why "Show", you have allready seen the whole message.

And it you are at the top of a catagory, like kirit.com or kirit.com/Site:/Forums then you will have a Show-link on the top of the page that does nothing but Refresh.

And how about a "Hidden-link" to minimize those posts of little interest to the reader.

Eagerly awaiting your reply.

That's pretty good. Indeed, the Show link does slightly different things for different sorts of things on the web site. For articles (which includes categories) it will take you to the URL for that article. You'll notice that this is what happens with the news items on the home page. For a post it takes you to the post within the thread.

FOST.3™ is really a framework for building business systems. Each sort of thing (object) can have a set of actions associated with it. Most visitors don't have permission much beyond Show and (Thread on posts). You'll notice that when you're logged in you also get New thread on articles and New post & Reply on threads and Reply on posts. When I'm logged in I get even more (object Property link and even a Delete link).

There is an argument* [*From W3C and from Jacob Nielsen, but I can find the references right now] that a link that just goes to the same page as you're already on should not be a link at all, so really the Show link shouldn't be there. I'm not so sure as it does have some marginal utility in that it will get the server to send you a potentially updated version of the page without you having to hit the Refresh button (which forces the browser to refresh everything, like graphics that won't have changed).

But still, the basic and simplest answer is that those gray bars are the FOST.3™ equivalent of a context menu.

Okay. Hey, at least you get Extra Credit for a speedy reply ;-)

Well, two years later I would say that you got some “questions and answers on the more technical articles” allright. For the other thing I am not sure. Maybe your Sitemeter has statistics on how many “people's pre-concieved notions about what is normal” you have punctured… ;-)

Nor me. Did anything surprise you? Personally I found the coup pretty surprising ;)

I don't think that's a feature yet, but I hear they're revamping their services. Maybe it's on the to do list :)
